Long Term Care

The Health Insurance Association of America (www.hiaa.org/consumer/guideltc.cfm) offers a comprehensive site that is an excellent place to begin learning the ins and outs of selecting long-term care insurance. The sponsor is a national trade association, and so the information is unbiased and does not favor one product over another. Several guides, including the Long-Term Care Checklist. Some sections are in a helpful Q & A format.

The Insurance Information Institute (www.iii.org/individuals/health) offers a more basic site, with sections that include "Should I buy long-term care insurance?" and, "How can I save on long-term care insurance?"

NOTE: Below are six major providers whose websites offer useful information and from which you can arrange directly for a policy. If you conduct a search by merely typing the phrase "long-term care insurance," many of the groups listed are brokers who offer to match you with a provider. They request a great deal of personal information that you might not want to share online with an unknown group.

The TIAA-CREF website (www.tiaa-cref.org/ltc/index.html) is a good place to begin your search for a provider that has the product you want at the price you want to pay. Click first on "How you can design a long-term care policy to meet your needs." You can request an application and an information kit online.

When visiting the John Hancock site (www.jhancock.com/ltc/index.html), pull down the state menu and click on your state to get information that applies to you. The "Frequently Asked Questions" and "Overview" sections are particularly useful.

The General Electric Financial Network site (www.gefn.com/longtermcare/index.jsp) has a "Cost Estimator" to provide you with a customized quote based on the most popular products for people your age who live in your state.

CNA (www.cnaltc.com) has a section called "Which policy is right for you?" that suggests questions you should ask when shopping for long-term care insurance. This site also provides a guide to nursing homes.

Transamerica (www.transamerica.com/insurance_products/long_term_care/) offers a brief "The Myths of Long-Term Care Insurance" section and a longer section on "Long-Term Care Frequently Asked Questions." You'll also find the "Long-Term Care Glossary," an exhaustive list of applicable terminology that may help you understand concepts better.

Prudential's Long-Term Care Learning Center (www.prufn.com/insurance/longtermcare/) offers five online brochures about aspects of long-term care insurance such as "Talking About LTC With Your Parents" and also with your children. Click on your state for a customized discussion of products available to you.
